Oh my goodness, I have started into the book of Job in my daily reading, and what a timely study. It is always helpful to be reminded who our true enemy is.
“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. And the LORD said to Satan, ‘From where do you come?’ So Satan answered the LORD and said, ‘From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.’ ” ~ Job 1:6-7
A couple of things jump out at me in these two verses. First of all, Satan has access to the throne room in heaven. He can freely wander into God’s presence amongst the other angels. Wow. He has not yet been banished, so he can go wherever he chooses.
And second, God knew where Satan had come from. He knows everything. He didn’t need to ask. This is written for our benefit. We need to be aware that our enemy roams freely, and that he is looking for ways to destroy God’s beloved children.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” ~ 1 Peter 5:8-9
A few chapters later, Job’s friend Eliphaz recounts a chilling event that had taken place.
“Now a word was secretly brought to me, and my ear received a whisper of it. In disquieting thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake. Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair on my body stood up. It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes; there was silence; then I heard a voice saying: ‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can a man be more pure than his Maker? If He puts no trust in His servants, if He charges His angels with error, how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before a moth? They are broken in pieces from morning till evening; they perish forever, with no one regarding. Does not their own excellence go away? They die, even without wisdom.’ ” ~ Job 4:12-21
Eliphaz recognized it as a visit from a spirit. I would venture to say from an evil spirit. Fear and trembling, shaking to the bones, hair standing up on end. Sounds creepy and from darkness, not light, don’t you think? Also notice that the words spoken were not words of comfort or exhortation, but of accusation and despair, doubt and discouragement. Like the lies and deceit Satan spoke in the garden of Eden:
“Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, ‘Has God indeed said, “You shall not eat of every tree of the garden”?’…Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die…’ ” ~ Genesis 3:1, 4
Twisting God’s words, His Truth. Telling us lies. Filling our hearts with despair and hopelessness. Satan delights in destroying all that God loves– all of His creation, but especially His children.
Abortion. Murder. Rape. War. Abuse. Deceit. Depression. Disease. Death. Every manner of evil and darkness. All are out of the pits of hell.
So remember our enemy is out and about, trying to destroy everything and everyone. And he knows that Jesus is Lord and Saviour, God Almighty.
“You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe–and tremble!” ~ James 2:19
Satan has read the Bible, and he knows his time grows short.
” ‘And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.’ ” ~ Genesis 3:15
“And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.” ~ Romans 16:20
So he is amping up his warfare, raging against the world and all who are in it. But we have the power of God on our side. Like in the book of Job, Satan cannot touch us unless God allows it.
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” ~ James 4:7
Submit to God. Seek after Him and His kingdom. Put on your armor.
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” ~ Ephesians 6:12-13
And pray. The battle is the Lord’s, and we must bring everything to Him in prayer so that He will wage the war and win on our behalf!
” ‘Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.’ ” ~ Matthew 26:41
“Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.” ~ Luke 6:12 ~ Jesus modeled a life of prayer.
“pray without ceasing,” ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:17
“Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” ~ James 5:16
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints” ~ Ephesians 6:17-18
Satan and his demons will soon be defeated, cast out of heaven and the presence of God, and into the lake of fire. For all eternity.
“And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, ‘Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.’ ” ~ Revelation 12:7-10
“The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” ~ Revelation 20:10
And then finally all Creation will rejoice!
“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away… And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.” ~ Revelation 21:4; 22:3-5
