Leaving the Comfort of My Own Little World

March 22 is World Water Day. Why should this matter to us? Why should this matter to me

We are all so very wrapped up in our own little corner of our own little world, aren’t we? (My nod to Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella.) Even when we are facing a “drought” year, we here in the Western world rest in the comfortable knowledge that we will still have access to clean water and good food. Oh, it may cost more, and our pretty green grass may die, but we won’t have to worry about dying or anything.

But what about the people around the world who do have to worry about dying? What about them?

  • 3.4 million people die each year from water-related diseases.* What if most of Los Angeles were wiped off of the map? Would we sit up and take notice?
  • Diarrhea is the second leading cause of death among children under the age of five around the world.* Nearly 1.5 million die each year — one in five — from diarrhea, more than those killed from measles, AIDS, and malaria combined. Guess what causes that diarrhea? Yep, dirty water.
  • Globally, women spend 200 million hours per day collecting water.* Um, what? 200 MILLION?

These are people, our brothers and sisters in Christ, suffering and dying without access to clean water. How this must break the Father’s heart! And how it should break yours and mine…

Obviously, this is a huge problem. How can we help?

As many of you know, my family has a heart for children. We sponsor four through several different organizations (you can follow the links found on my blog page for more information). For $35 – $40 per month, our “adopted” kiddos are provided with food, water, an education, and the knowledge that someone loves them — and more importantly, that God loves them.

But if child sponsorship is not your thing, Gospel For Asia has other options for you. Why not help purchase a BioSand water filter? For a one-time gift of $30 — just THIRTY BUCKS — you can provide water that is 98% pure, for an entire family or even a small community! Now that is a great deal, and a life changing gift to boot.

Are you looking for a way to get involved in a deeper way? (pun intended) How about contributing toward the purchase of a Jesus Well? For just $1400, local contractors are hired to drill a well, providing local and safe access to good, clean water for an entire village! You can give any amount, large or small, and know that 100% of your donation is being applied to a well.

Above all, PRAY. Ask God for direction, how He would like you to get involved. Lift up the people around the world who are struggling to find a source of clean water for their families. Intercede on behalf of those fighting illness and disease because of dirty water.

And be thankful. We are truly blessed, never take that for granted!

” ‘For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.’ ” ~ Mark 9:41
