Resting While the Waves Rise

We are here at the Oregon Coast for our yearly vacation. There is nothing that restores my soul like being at the ocean. The gentle roar of the waves woos my heart into its quiet place, blotting out the cacophony coming from the world and all its troubles. Everything else falls away. All is right in the world, as my attention is drawn to the incredible power of the mighty Pacific, and the omnipotence of the One who created it and controls it.

“O LORD God of hosts, who is mighty like You, O LORD? Your faithfulness also surrounds You. You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, You still them.” ~ Psalm 89:8-9

We arrived yesterday afternoon and were greeted by blue skies and sunlight sparkling on the water, with temperatures in the 60’s. What a change from the freezing fog we left behind at home! Today the blue skies are gone, and the waves’ crescendo is growing louder as storms are a-comin’.

Yet whatever the weather holds, I know the One who rules the waves, on the ocean and in my own life. God is mighty, and His faithfulness does indeed surround Him. And He will still those rising waves.

And so I will rest.

“There remains therefore a rest for the people of God…
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” ~ Hebrews 4:9, 16

” ‘Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.’ ” ~ Matthew 11:28-30
