Happy In-Dependence Day! Are you a child of the one true King? Then in Him you are dependent! 🙂
I am reading the book of Hebrews. Our pastor recently taught through Hebrews, and I so appreciate how God uses him to bring clarity and insight to the Scriptures. As I read today, I was thankful I had jotted some notes in the margins.
For instance, did you know that the earthly tabernacle Moses had built for the children of Israel was a copy of the original, heavenly one? There is a Holy of Holies in heaven, a mercy seat sprinkled with the blood of Jesus. Unlike the priests of the earthly tabernacle and temple, who had to repeatedly offer sacrifices under the old covenant because the people continually sinned, Jesus offered Himself up as the perfect sacrifice – our new covenant – and shed His blood, once for all, purifying the temple and washing us clean. Forever. We only have to accept and receive that cleansing of sins. Once, for eternity.
“But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance…
And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission. Therefore it was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another– He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.” ~ Hebrews 9:11-15, 22-28
Here is something I had never before thought about: Sin originated in heaven. Wow. The first sin was in the prideful heart and rebellious actions of Lucifer, the great and terrible fallen angel we call Satan. When he and his minions rose up against God, the stain of sin touched the heavenly realms. The heavenly temple had to be purified. Jesus took care of it. Once, for all. Another way He defeated Satan!
Take heart, Christian. Here is another interesting fact found in the book of Hebrews: God cannot lie. “…it is impossible for God to lie…” ~ Hebrews 6:18b. Anything He promises in His word is truth. If God said it, He will do it.
We who have believed, by grace through faith in Jesus, will “receive the promise of eternal inheritance”. And “To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.” He is coming back for us!
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.” ~ 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
Let us celebrate our In-Dependence (and the birth of our country) and watch and pray! Jesus is coming soon! May our nation be ready.
