“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us…that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.” ~ Ephesians 2:4, 7
Did you know that God is rich? Oh, He owns the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10) and pretty much everything else, but I don’t mean rich in the financial sense. His “bank”, His very nature, Who God is, contains far greater riches!
In the above verses, we are told God “is rich in mercy, because of His great love” and has “exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness”. He is also rich in:
Goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering
“Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?” Romans 2:4
“and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory,” ~ Romans 9:23
“that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,” ~ Ephesians 3:16
“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” ~ Philippians 4:19
Wisdom and knowledge
“Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!” ~ Romans 11:33
The glory of His inheritance
“the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,” ~ Ephesians 1:18
Unsearchable riches of Christ
“To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,” ~ Ephesians 3:8
In All Things
“Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.” ~ 1 Timothy 6:17
Not only is God rich in all things, but He shares His riches with us! How incredible to know that the all-knowing, all-powerful, ever-present Creator God of the universe is willing to share His grace, His mercy, His knowledge and wisdom, His goodness and patience, His inheritance (and the promise of eternal life with Him), His SON, and all things with me. And with you. That is almost unfathomable.
The riches of this world are tempting, and essential for assorted sundries in this life (coffee, food, shelter, clothing, etc.), yet far greater things are stored up for those of us who choose, by grace through faith, to follow Jesus!
“esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward.” ~ Hebrews 11:26
Esteeming. From the Greek word hēgeomai, meaning “to consider, deem, account, think”. Reproach. In the Greek, oneidismos, meaning “such as Christ suffered, for the cause of God, from His enemies”.
Are we willing, as Moses was (the one referred to in the above verse in Hebrews), to consider the suffering that Christ went through, for us, as greater than treasures and mountains of earthly riches? Are we willing to join in that suffering, as we are called to do, by picking up our cross and following after Jesus (Matthew 16:24, Mark 8:34)? Will we choose the riches of God’s “bank”, of His nature ~ and the reward waiting for us in heaven?
“Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, ‘One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.’ ” ~ Mark 10:21
” ‘Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’ ” ~ Matthew 6:19-21
One last thought on the riches of God: He is rich with love. For God is love. And oh what love He lavishes upon us! Freely!
“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” ~ 1 John 3:1a
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” ~ 1 John 4:7-10
