And My Soul Will Live

Oh to be like You
Give all I have just to know You
Jesus there’s no one besides You
Forever the hope in my heart

(the chorus from “Scandal of Grace” by Hillsong United)

These words have been running through my head this morning, as tears streak down my face. Ever have one of those days, when your heart is overwhelmed by so many little hurts, wounds, and disappointments, that you can no longer contain them, and they spill out in sorrow? This is one of those days. But I am comforted by these words that God brought to my soul as a balm.

And it’s all, because of You, Jesus
It’s all, because of You, Jesus
It’s all, because of Your love
And my soul will live

What a magnificent gift God has given me, a song to sing softly to my Saviour, as my heart quietly breaks, and my mind fights off the lies of the enemy. “Of course it is your fault. You are not a good enough person, a good enough mom, a good enough daughter, a good enough wife. You have never been good enough. Why wouldn’t they look for someone better?”

” ‘…He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.’ ” ~ John 8:44b. These are the words of Jesus, speaking of the devil, Satan, our adversary, who “walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” ~ 1 Peter 5:8b. I have been chewed up pretty good these last few days.

What are we to do with this enemy?

“Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” ~ 1 Peter 5:9

But how?

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” ~ Ephesians 6:10-13

We MUST recognize that our enemy is not flesh and blood, but a spiritual one. The battle is incredibly fierce, between good and evil, God and Satan, us and the “spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places”. This is not for the faint of heart. And when we forget this, we end up feeling defeated, beaten, and bruised.

Be strong in the Lord. Put on the whole armor. But what is the armor?

“Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints…” ~ Ephesians 6:14-18

Notice this is filled with commandments. These are not suggestions. Oh, I wish I would quit forgetting to put on my armor!

(You) “Stand.” Don’t retreat. (You) “Gird(ed) your waist with truth…put on the breastplate of righteousness.” Jesus is truth, and when we accept Him as Saviour, we are clothed in His righteousness. Put on Jesus!

(You) “Shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace.” Do you have a firm foundation? Do you know what you believe? Be grounded in God’s Word!

(You) “Taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.” Trust God. Believe His promises. Remember His faithfulness. Don’t lose FAITH!

(You) “Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” By grace through faith you have been saved (Ephesians 2:8), and you can never “lose” your salvation. No one, NO ONE, can snatch you from God’s hand (John 10:28-29). Read God’s word. Study it. Stay in it.

(You) “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.” Pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). And pray for each other. Remember, “…the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” ~ 1 Peter 5:9. Let the Holy Spirit lead you. He will even translate the cries of your heart into prayers before our Heavenly Father (Romans 8:26).

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” ~ Philippians 4:6-7

Oh no, You never let go
Through the calm and through the storm
Oh no, You never let go
In every high and every low
Oh no, You never let go
Lord, You never let go of me

(the chorus from “You Never Let Go” by Matt Redman)
