These Are The Things You Shall Do

” ‘Execute true justice, show mercy and compassion everyone to his brother. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. Let none of you plan evil in his heart against his brother.’ ” ~ Zechariah 7:9b-10

” ‘These are the things you shall do; speak each man the truth to his neighbor; give judgment in your gates for truth, justice, and peace; let none of you think evil in your heart against your neighbor; and do not love a false oath. For all these are things that I hate,’ says the LORD.” ~ Zechariah 8:16-17

Here in Zechariah, we are given wise counsel for how we should live our lives.

Be just. “Execute true justice”, “Give judgment in your gates for … justice”.

“But the path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day.” ~ Proverbs 4:18

“Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is His delight.” ~ Proverbs 11:1

Be truthful. “Speak each man the truth to his neighbor; give judgment in your gates for truth”.

“Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day.” ~ Psalm 25:4-5

Be at peace with one another. “Give judgment in your gates for … peace”.

“The LORD will give strength to His people; the LORD will bless His people with peace.” ~ Psalm 29:11

“Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” ~ Psalm 34:14

Be merciful. “Show mercy … everyone to his brother”.

“All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth, to such as keep His covenant and His testimonies.” ~ Psalm 25:10

“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.” ~ Psalm 103:8

Be compassionate. “Show … compassion everyone to his brother”.

“Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness; he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.” ~ Psalm 112:4

“The LORD is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and great in mercy. The LORD is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works.” ~ Psalm 145:8-9

Be kind and care for others ~ LOVE one another. “Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor”.

“What is desired in a man is kindness, and a poor man is better than a liar.” ~ Proverbs 19:22

“For His merciful kindness is great toward us, and the truth of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD!” ~ Psalm 117:2

“Defend the poor and fatherless; do justice to the afflicted and needy.” ~ Psalm 82:3

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God… Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” ~ 1 John 4:7, 11

Be mindful of your heart and your thoughts, and let them be good and right toward one another. “Let none of you plan evil in his heart against his brother”, “Let none of you think evil in your heart against your neighbor”.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” ~ Psalm 139:23-24

“The thoughts of the righteous are right, but the counsels of the wicked are deceitful.” ~ Proverbs 12:5

“Commit your works to the LORD, and your thoughts will be established.” ~ Proverbs 16:3

Be honest and a man or woman of your word. “And do not love a false oath”.

“Good and upright is the LORD; therefore He teaches sinners in the way.” ~ Psalm 25:8

“Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.” ~ Psalm 97:11

What is the common thread in all of this? The LORD! He doesn’t just tell us how to live, but He shows us. Jesus modeled all of this as He walked the earth, fully man and yet also fully God. And we have been given the Holy Spirit to teach us and to guide us in the way we should live. We cannot do it all on our own strength!

Seek after God, and He will lead you in the way you should go.

“Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man. Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” ~ Proverbs 3:3-6

“He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” ~ Micah 6:8
