He Counts the Stars and Calls Them By Name

“Is not God in the height of heaven? And see the highest stars, how lofty they are!” ~ Job 22:12 (NKJV)

“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?” ~ Psalm 8:3-4 (NKJV)

“He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name. Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.” ~ Psalm 147:4-5 (NKJV)

It has been hazy at the beach. When it is hot inland, marine air is pulled in onto the coast. We have been loving the mild temps (60’s and 70’s), and the clouds usually burn off by afternoon, returning at dusk, so we have enjoyed some blue skies and sunshine. But cloudy evenings mean no glimpses of the meteor shower. Until last night.

Yesterday was a jewel of a day on the Oregon coast. Bea-U-tiful! Last night, as we watched the half moon make its descent into the ocean, its reflection glistening on the water, it occurred to me that we might be able to catch a glimpse of the stars. And oh! what a display!

My heart began singing…

God of wonders beyond our galaxy, You are holy, holy
The universe declares Your majesty, You are holy, holy

I have always treasured time spent at the ocean and evenings spent studying the night sky. The two combined? Breathtaking. I was so overwhelmed by the magnificent sky that I told God even if I didn’t catch any of the meteor shower, I was in awe of His creation.

And then, listening to the gentle symphony of the water with an occasional crescendo from the stronger seventh waves, I watched as a star shot across the sky, leaving a glittering fairy dust trail. I gasped. And I grinned. Because God did that just for me! And for you, too. He loves us so much that He causes creation to put on incredible shows, not just for our enjoyment, but also to woo every last person to Him. Have you been wooed to Jesus?

He loves us, oh how He loves us, oh how He loves us, oh how He loves… **

“Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; Praise Him in the heights! Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts! Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all you stars of light! Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, And you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the LORD, For He commanded and they were created. He also established them forever and ever; He made a decree which shall not pass away. Praise the LORD from the earth, You great sea creatures and all the depths;… Kings of the earth and all peoples; Princes and all judges of the earth; Both young men and maidens; Old men and children. Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven.” ~ Psalm 148:1-7, 11-13 (NKJV)
