Who Is This King of Glory?

I love the vivid descriptions written down by Ezekiel! What were those cherubs guarding?

“Now over the heads of the living beings there was something like an expanse, like the awesome gleam of crystal, extended over their heads…I also heard the sound of their wings like the sound of abundant waters as they went, like the voice of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army camp…Now above the expanse that was over their heads there was something resembling a throne, like lapis lazuli in appearance; and on that which resembled a throne, high up, was a figure with the appearance of a man. Then I noticed from the appearance of His loins and upward something like glowing metal that looked like fire all around within it, and from the appearance of His loins and downward I saw something like fire; and there was a radiance around Him. As the appearance of the rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the surrounding radiance. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell on my face and heard a voice speaking.” ~ Ezekiel 1:22, 24a, 26-28

“Then I looked, and behold, in the expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim something like a sapphire stone, in appearance resembling a throne, appeared above them.” ~ Ezekiel 10:1

“…the hand of the Lord God fell on me there. Then I looked, and behold, a likeness as the appearance of a man; from His loins and downward there was the appearance of fire, and from His loins and upward the appearance of brightness, like the appearance of glowing metal. And He stretched out the form of a hand and caught me by a lock of my head; and the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem…And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, like the appearance which I saw in the plain.” ~ Ezekiel 8:1b-3a, 4

What can we learn from this? A platform like crystal was above the heads (and LOUD wings!) of the cherubim. Something resembling a throne, like lapis lazuli and like a sapphire, and a figure with the appearance of a man was upon it. And what did this “likeness as the appearance of a man” look like? Like glowing metal, like fire, the appearance of brightness, like the appearance of glowing metal, and there was a radiance around Him, as the appearance of a rainbow. Amazing!

Now read the apostle John’s description of Jesus in the book of Revelation:

“And I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands; and in the middle of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His breast with a golden girdle. And His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire; and His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been caused to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters. And in His right hand He held seven stars; and out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword; and His face was like the sun shining in its strength. And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as a dead man.” ~ Revelation 1:12-17a

I’m thinking that Ezekiel saw the pre-incarnate Jesus! “Like a son of man”; “girded across His breast with a golden girdle”; “His eyes were like a flame of fire”; “His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been caused to glow in a furnace”; “and His face was like the sun shining in its strength”.

And, not only that, but in Ezekiel 8, we are shown the Trinity! “A likeness as the appearance of a man”, “the Spirit lifted me up” (by his HAIR!), “and behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there” ~ Son, Spirit, Father. How beautiful this is to me, to see not only the promise and appearance of Jesus throughout the entire Bible, but also to see how the Father, the Son, and the Spirit all work together, in perfect unity, distinctly separate and yet inseparable. Hallelujah!
