A Spirit of Adoption

“Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone? And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.” ~ Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Oh, what a gift ~ to have, and to be, a friend! God created us for relationship. Relationship with Him. Relationship with others.

I am blessed with dear and wonderful friends. But the one I thought of when reading these verses is my husband. He is definitely my best friend. He completes me in a way that only he can, and God knew this when He designed us for each other. God is amazing! His plans are perfect.

“Then the LORD God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.’ ” ~ Genesis 2:18

There is a wonderful companionship found in a happy marriage. And my one piece of marital advice is to make sure you have three strands in your cord. Bring God into the center of your relationship and your lives. Pray together. Ask God for wisdom in all the decisions of life. Study His Word. Love Him, and love each other! Accept God’s grace, and give grace to your spouse.

But back to friends of all sorts. đŸ™‚ Friends are so important!

“Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” ~ Proverbs 27:17

Make sure you have people in your life who will help rub off your rough edges and keep you “sharp”. We all need someone to share in our labor, to pick us up when we fall, and to help us be strong and fight when the enemy attacks.

God created us in His image. That means that the longing for relationship we all have is from God. He longs for relationship, too. With you and me!

But God doesn’t want to just be your friend. He wants to be your Lord and your Saviour and your Father.

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,” ~ John 1:12

“For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, ‘Abba! Father!’ The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs of Christ…” ~ Romans 8:14-17a

“For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” ~ Galatians 3:26

Have you been adopted into God’s family yet? Through faith in Christ Jesus, you too can be called a child of God ~ why not cry “Abba! Father!” today? I would love to be your sister in Christ!
