“As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects man.” ~ Proverbs 27:19
Isn’t this so very true? When you peer into still, calm water, the water can only reflect what is truly there. You aren’t going to look down and spot a model (unless you are a model!), or a giraffe, or a Lamborghini. You are going to see yourself, as you really are.
What about our hearts? The heart reveals who you really are on the inside.
God has a lot to say about our hearts in His Word.
“But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for [the LORD seeth] not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” ~ 1 Samuel 16:7 (KJV) God doesn’t care about the reflection of our face in the water. He cares about the reflection of our heart.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:” ~ Psalm 139:23 (KJV)
David was brave! Are you ready to let God search and know your heart and thoughts? Guess what? He already knows.
“The heart [is] deceitful above all [things], and desperately wicked: who can know it?” ~ Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV) This is the sad truth. Unless we accept Jesus as Saviour, and put on HIS righteousness, we are doomed to be deceitful and desperately wicked.
“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” ~ Luke 6:45 (KJV) Jesus states it clearly. Whatever pours out of your mouth reflects your heart. I want to be the good man with the good treasure bringing forth good! In my own power, with my old sin nature, I can only be the evil man. But through Jesus’ salvation, redemption, and righteousness, and with the power of the Holy Spirit, I can be the good man.
“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” ~ Luke 12:34 (KJV) Here is a good “heart test”. What do you desire? What do you value? Godly things? Or something else?
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” ~ Romans 10:9-10 (KJV) Here is the most important “heart test”. Have you believed in your heart and confessed with your mouth that Jesus is your Lord and Saviour?
So once we have believed in our hearts and confessed with our mouths, how do we guard our hearts, so they will reflect God and not our old sinful nature?
“He will not fear evil tidings; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.” ~ Psalm 112:7 Trust God.
“Thy word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against Thee.” ~ Psalm 119:11 Read and treasure God’s Word. Think on it. Remember it always.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” ~ Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust God with all your heart. Lean on His understanding. Acknowledge Him in everything. Then follow His direction.
” ‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.’ ” ~ Jeremiah 29:11-13 Do you really trust God and His plans for you? Do you call upon Him and pray, knowing He listens? Do you seek after Him with all your heart? If you do, you WILL find Him!
“Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS,” ~ Ephesians 6:14 Where does the breastplate of our armor go? Over our heart! Put on the righteousness of Jesus to protect your heart!
” ‘Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?’ And He said to him, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ ” ~ Matthew 22:36-37
There it is. Jesus tells us to LOVE GOD. With all our hearts, with all our souls, and with all our minds.
