The Book of Wisdom

“The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: to know wisdom and instruction, to discern the sayings of understanding, to receive instruction in wise behavior, righteousness, justice and equity; to give prudence to the naive, to the youth knowledge and discretion, a wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel, to understand a proverb and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles.” ~ Proverbs 1:1-6

I started reading the book of Proverbs this morning, and the very first passage tells us who wrote the majority of this book ~ King Solomon ~ as well as the book’s purpose. This serves as a good study guide as we read through Proverbs.

~ To know wisdom and instruction
~ To discern the sayings of understanding
~ To receive instruction in wise behavior, righteousness, justice, and equity
~ To give prudence to the naive and knowledge and discretion to the youth
~ For the wise man to hear and increase in learning
~ For the man of understanding to acquire wise counsel
~ To help understand a proverb and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles

Wisdom. What does this word really mean? My trusty old Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as follows: “quality of being wise; ability to judge soundly and deal sagaciously with facts, esp. as they relate to life and conduct; discernment and judgment; discretion; sagacity”. Sagacity, sagaciously. Those are words we don’t use much anymore. Sagacious: “of keen penetration and judgment; discerning and farsighted in judging men, motives, and means; shrewd”.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” ~ Proverbs 1:7

The True Source of all knowledge, wisdom, and instruction is God Himself. Fools do not acknowledge and fear the LORD, and consequently they lack wisdom. Only God gives true wisdom. Don’t be a fool! 🙂

“For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” ~ Proverbs 2:6

From His mouth. God’s words are knowledge and understanding. What do we call the Bible? God’s Word! God has given us wisdom, knowledge, and understanding in the Bible ~ our job is to read and study it!

“‘And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you…the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.'” ~ John 14:16-17, 26

Jesus told us that we would receive the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, sent from the Father, to teach us all things and help us to remember all we have learned. So, good news, once we accept Jesus as our Saviour, we have help from the Holy Spirit! There is no way we can understand, remember, and obey God’s Word without God’s help.

Do you belong to Jesus? If not, give your life to Him today! If so, then join with me in asking God to reveal His wisdom to us from His Word, through the help and power of the Holy Spirit. And let’s hide it in our hearts, where the Holy Spirit will bring it to our remembrance in times of need!

“Thy word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against Thee.” ~ Psalm 119:11
