“Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O LORD. Lord, hear my voice! Let Thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. If Thou, LORD, shouldst mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with Thee, that Thou mayest be feared. I wait for the LORD, my soul does wait, and in His word do I hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than the watchmen for the morning; indeed, more than the watchmen for the morning. O Israel, hope in the LORD; for with the LORD there is lovingkindness, and with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.” ~ Psalm 130
Ever feel like you are crying out to God, but perhaps He doesn’t hear you? The Psalmist felt this way. “Lord, hear my voice!” He was commanding God to hear his supplications.
Supplications. What is a supplication? I grabbed my trusty OLD Merriam-Webster dictionary and looked it up. Act of supplicating; a humble petition. Supplicate: To make a humble entreaty; esp., to implore God. To entreat for; to ask for earnestly and humbly.
The Psalmist was earnestly and humbly asking God for redemption, for help. He had received the forgiveness God had freely offered to him, and he had fear and reverence for the LORD. This man’s soul waited for the Lord “more than the watchmen for the morning”. The watchmen had to stay alert and be watching for the enemy all through the long night ~ the whole city depended upon them.
How much more do our very souls depend upon the Lord, waiting on Him and His redemption? We earnestly and humbly ask for His direction, for His guidance, for His help, that we may know the right way and walk therein.
“Let me hear Thy lovingkindness in the morning; for I trust in Thee; teach me the way in which I should walk; for to Thee I lift up my soul.” ~ Psalm 143:8
Even if it seems impossible, God will make a way, if we wait on Him and His will.
“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, [and] rivers in the desert.” ~ Isaiah 43:19 (KJV)
We are lost without His direction, prone to wander and stumble. We need God.
“I know, O LORD, that a man’s way is not in himself; nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.” ~ Jeremiah 10:23
The Psalmist also hoped in God’s word. God promises us that He hears us and will come to our defense.
“And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in Thee.” ~ Psalm 39:7
“The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry.” ~ Psalm 34:15
Put your trust and your hope in God. He is good and faithful, worthy of our trust and hope. And praise Him while you are supplicating!
“But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.” ~ Psalm 71:14 (KJV)
“I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.” ~ Psalm 118:21 (KJV)
“Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.” ~ Psalm 145:2 (KJV)
“While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being.” ~ Psalm 146:2 (KJV)
Ultimately, God will lead us home, to heaven, to be with Him always and forever, through Jesus.
“‘Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way where I am going.’ Thomas said to Him, ‘Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.'” ~ John 14:1-6
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Follow Him! 🙂
