Dinosaurs and Dragons

Dinosaurs! People often wonder about them. When did they live? Did God create them? What were they like? Good news ~ the book of Job gives us two excellent descriptions of dinosaurs. I love how God Himself tells us of His amazing Creation in this book of the Bible!

“‘Behold now, Behemoth, which I made as well as you; he eats grass like an ox. Behold now, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly. He bends his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together. His bones are tubes of bronze; his limbs are like bars of iron.'” ~ Job 40:15-18

Some scholars say this describes a hippopotamus or an elephant. However, many Creation scientists disagree. Have you seen the tail of a hippo or an elephant? “He bends his tail like a cedar”. A cedar is a great and magnificent tree! I agree with the scholars who say this is likely a description of one of the huge herbivores: Brachiosaurus, Diplodocus, or Apatosaurus.

On Day 6 of Creation, Almighty God made the land dinosaurs ~ “Then God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind’; and it was so.” ~ Genesis 1:24

On to our next dinosaur…

“‘Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook? Or press down his tongue with a cord? Can you put a rope in his nose? Or pierce his jaw with a hook?…Can you fill his skin with harpoons, or his head with fishing spears? Lay your hand on him; remember the battle; you will not do it again!…I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, or his mighty strength, or his orderly frame. Who can strip off his outer armor? Who can come within his double mail? Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth there is terror. His strong scales are his pride, shut up as with a tight seal. One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. They are joined one to another; they clasp each other and cannot be separated.'” ~ Job 41:1-2, 7-8, 12-17

Again, some scholars say this is a description of a crocodile. Yet, as we continue reading…

“‘His sneezes flash forth light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. Out of his mouth go burning torches; sparks of fire leap forth. Out of his nostrils smoke goes forth, as from a boiling pot and burning rushes. His breath kindles coals, and a flame goes forth from his mouth…He makes the depths boil like a pot; he makes the sea like a jar of ointment. Behind him he makes a wake to shine; one would think the deep to be gray-haired.'” ~ Job 41:18-21, 31-32

Doesn’t that sound to you like a fire-breathing sea-dragon creature? Wow! I don’t think this is a mere crocodile. 🙂

God, the Creator of all things, made the sea dinosaurs on Day 5 ~ “Then God said, ‘Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens.’ And God created the great sea monsters, and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good.” ~ Genesis 1:20-21
