Fallen From Heaven and Roaming About

“There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job, and that man was blameless, upright, fearing God, and turning away from evil.” ~ Job 1:1

I am reading the book of Job. The above description given of Job doesn’t mean he was without sin- remember, “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:” ~ Romans 3:10 (KJV)- but he sought to live a blameless, upright, God-fearing life. He was blessed with seven sons and three daughters, and a very large amount of livestock, which meant vast wealth in that culture, “…and that man was the greatest of all the men of the east.” ~ Job 1:3b

Job was happy and healthy, following after God, and blessed with family and wealth, until…

“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. And the LORD said to Satan, ‘From where do you come?’ Then Satan answered the LORD and said, ‘From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.'” ~ Job 1:6-7

Did you know that Satan is an angel? Notice that he freely entered into the presence of God, with the rest of the angels. When Satan rebelled against God, he became one of the fallen angels, which we refer to as demons.

“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! [how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.” ~ Isaiah 14:12-15 (KJV)

Satan desired to be like God, above God, full of pride and greed. And contrary to how our culture depicts him, he is actually quite beautiful, handsome in fact ~ “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” ~ 2 Corinthians 11:14 (KJV)

“…’You had the seal of perfection, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering: the ruby, the topaz, and the diamond; the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper; the lapis lazuli, the turquoise, and the emerald; and the gold, the workmanship of your settings and sockets, was in you. On the day that you were created they were prepared. You were the anointed cherub who covers, and I placed you there. You were on the holy mountain of God; you walked in the midst of the stones of fire. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, until unrighteousness was found in you. By the abundance of your trade you were internally filled with violence, and you sinned; therefore I have cast you as profane from the mountain of God. And I have destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor. I cast you to the ground;… ~ Ezekiel 28:12b-17a

Satan was a cherub. Doesn’t that make you think twice about those cute little chubby babies depicted as cherubs?

On that day long ago, when Satan came from “roaming about on the earth” to enter into the presence of God Himself (please notice that Satan freely roams the earth), God gave to Satan permission to test Job.

“Then the LORD said to Satan, ‘Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him.’ So Satan departed from the presence of the LORD.” ~ Job 1:12

Satan desired to take everything from Job. We are warned that he desires to kill and destroy~ “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” ~ 1 Peter 5:8 (KJV) But take note: though Satan sought to devour Job, he had to get permission from God in order to do anything to him. Those of us who belong to God are protected by God.

We find that Satan went after many others in the Bible.

“And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.” ~ Mark 1:13 (KJV) Jesus Himself

“And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired [to have] you, that he may sift [you] as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.” ~ Luke 22:31-32 (KJV) Simon Peter, and JESUS prayed for him!

“Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.” ~ 2 Corinthians 2:11 (KJV) All believers are under attack from Satan and his demons, but again, we have the power and protection of God.

“And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” ~ Revelation 20:10 (KJV) “‘…into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:'” ~ Matthew 25:41b (KJV)

The lake of fire and brimstone, designed especially for him and his followers, awaits Satan, and he knows this. Satan also knows his time is short, for he is an excellent Bible scholar and recognizes the signs. Why do you think that the world is becoming more and more violent and dangerous and wicked? Satan is seeking to kill and destroy as many as possible as quickly as possible.

Take courage. “And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [be] with you. Amen.” ~ Romans 16:20 (KJV)

And put on that armor! (Ephesians 6)

*While I do not believe we should study Satan (be careful), it behooves us to be aware that he is a very real threat and to became familiar with how he attacks us. The Strategy of Satan by Warren Wiersbe is an excellent book worth reading.
