A Very Good Friday Indeed

Today is Good Friday, and indeed it is very good! Why? Because through Jesus’ death upon the cross, the penalty for our sins is paid. He took the punishment for our crimes, bore the sins of the entire world, and gave Himself so that we might not have to die for them ourselves. Have you accepted His gift yet?

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” ~ Romans 3:23 (KJV)

As our pastor says, “All, in the Greek, means all.” Every one of us has sinned. Is sinning. Will sin. Again.

“For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” ~ Romans 6:23 (KJV)

Our sins require the “death penalty”. But God loves us and did something to save us from ourselves.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” ~ John 3:16-17(KJV)

Did you know that Jesus was not forcefully put to death, but that He was given and chose to go and die, like a lamb to the slaughter? (Isaiah 53:7) The Roman soldiers, the Jewish leaders, even the governor Pilate had no power or authority over Jesus, the Son of God.

“Pilate therefore said to Him, ‘You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify you?’ Jesus answered, ‘You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above…'” ~ John 19:10-11 (NASB)

God gave them the authority to kill His Son, and Jesus submitted to their authority, but more importantly, to His Father’s will (see Luke 22:42) and went to His death. For me. And for you.

“But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” ~ Philippians 2:7-8 (KJV)

Jesus chose to die, and He chose when to die. As the Son of God, He had complete control and authority over His life, and His death.

“And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, ‘Father, into Thy hands I commit My spirit.’ And having said this, He breathed His last.” ~ Luke 23:46 (NASB)

He freely gave His life. It was not taken. He gave it, as a gift. For me. And for you.

The only sinless Man to walk the face of this earth, Jesus, took our sin upon Himself, took our “death penalty”, because He loves us. That much.

“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.” ~ 1 John 4:7-11 (KJV)

Don’t reject God’s love! Don’t let His gift to you sit “unopened”. Take it, “open” it, accept it. He died so we would have the opportunity to be debt-free before God, standing in the righteousness of Jesus- forgiven, cleansed and restored.

Oh, how He loves you and me! 🙂
