For Your Good

Ever wonder what God wants from us? Good news! Moses gives us the answer in Deuteronomy 10, for what he told the sons of Israel is applicable in our own lives today.

“‘And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require from you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the LORD’s commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good? Behold, to the LORD your God belong heaven and the highest heavens, the earth and all that is in it.'” ~ Deuteronomy 10:12-14 (NAS)

We are to fear Him. If we have accepted Jesus’ free gift of salvation, then we don’t have to tremble in fear before God. What we deserve (“the wages of sin is death” ~ Romans 6:23a) has been paid in full by Jesus when He took our place on the cross, so those who believe in Him and accept this gift, receive mercy. When Jesus rose from the dead, He conquered death for us (“but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” ~ Romans 6:23b, KJV), and we are given grace. So how do we fear Him as believers? We recognize that He is the great and almighty Creator, that He holds the universe in His hands, and He is a just and perfect and righteous God. Reverence and respect Him. He isn’t our “pal”. He is God.

We are to walk in His ways. How do we do this? Study the Bible. Find out Who God is. Obey Him. Imitate Him. Jesus gave us the perfect example, as the Son of God here on earth. Follow Jesus!

We are to love Him. “We love him, because he first loved us.” ~ 1 John 4:19 (KJV) God has given us an example of how to love by loving us first. “‘For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.'” ~ John 3:16 (KJV) Jesus told us, “‘Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.'” ~ John 15:13 (KJV) God loved us so much that He died in our place so that our relationship with Him could be restored. Remember, love is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22), so with the power of the Holy Spirit, we can love like God, and love Him.

We are to serve Him with all our heart and with all our soul. Not half-hearted, “only on Sundays or when it is convenient for me”, service. We are to be “sold out, all or nothing”, living to bring Him glory. It should not only be what we strive to do with our lives, but who we are. Servants of the most high God!

We are to keep the LORD’s commandments and statutes. How do we do this? Read our Bibles, find what He commands us to do, and obey! Again, only with the power of the Holy Spirit can we truly live in obedience to God. Jesus said, “‘If ye love me, keep my commandments.'” ~ John 14:15 (KJV) Obedience is another way we love God.

God is worthy of all this, and more, from us. “Behold, to the LORD your God belong heaven and the highest heavens, the earth and all that is in it.” Everything belongs to Him! 🙂
