But You Shall Remember

Moses reminded the sons of Israel that God kept their clothes and shoes from wearing out in the wilderness, and He provided manna for them to eat- “…’that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD.'” ~ Deuteronomy 8:3b

Then he told them of the good land they were receiving- “…’a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey; a land where you shall eat food without scarcity, in which you shall not lack anything; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper.'” ~ Deuteronomy 8:7b-9

It must have sounded almost heavenly to them after forty years in the wilderness!

Moses gave them a warning next, and we would do well to heed it ourselves.

“‘When you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you. Beware lest you forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments and His ordinances and His statutes which I am commanding you today; lest, when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them, and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies, then your heart becomes proud, and you forget the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery…Otherwise, you may say in your heart, ‘My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.’ But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. And it shall come about if you ever forget the LORD your God, and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I testify against you today that you shall surely perish.'” ~ Deuteronomy 8:10-14, 17-19

As I read this, it seemed to be written for my nation. We have plenty to eat (most of the time), we have built homes and become quite comfortable in them, our possessions and money have multiplied. We are a wealthy, and very proud, country. In our humble beginnings, we understood that it was all from God, and our laws and foundations were built upon the laws and principles found in the Bible. But as the years have passed, we have sought other answers to life’s basic questions, made for ourselves new laws and foundations, and pushed God out the door.

Who needs a Creator when we have evolution? Man created himself. Who needs the Bible when we have our own assorted ideas of truth? There is no absolute truth. Who needs to give thanks to God? We have made our own wealth and built up society on our own strength. Who needs Jesus? It is intolerant to say that He is the only Way to heaven. Oh, America, you break my heart. How much more do you break the heart of God Himself? And we are perishing.

“But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth…”

Let’s “remember, repent, and repeat”, returning to our foundation on God and His word, one heart at a time…
