Deuteronomy 6 brings happy memories to mind. Our pastor in Corvallis taught us about the Shema in early spring, when we celebrated our church services outside under flowering trees. 🙂
Moses earnestly desired the best for the sons of Israel, his “children”, and he pled with them.
“‘O Israel, you should listen and be careful to do it, that it may be well with you and that you may multiply greatly, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.'” ~ Deuteronomy 6:3
And then he gave them this pearl of wisdom and truth, which became a cornerstone of the Jewish faith~ the Shema, “Hear”:
“‘Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God [is] one LORD:
And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.'” ~ Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (KJV)
YHWH, Yahweh is our God, Yahweh alone. He is one. And we should love Him, and Him alone, with all our heart, soul and might.
Take these words into your heart, and let them spill out from your lips, to your children and to your friends. Keep them at the forefront of your mind, remember them always, let them guide you and your household.
When we talk about God, He listens in on the conversations. And I think it must please Him. 🙂
“Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, and the LORD gave attention and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the LORD and who esteem His name.” ~ Malachi 3:16
Jesus Himself quoted from the Shema, when asked what the greatest commandment was.
“Jesus answered, ‘The foremost is, ‘HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD; AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH’.'” ~ Mark 12:29-30
Jesus added “with all your mind”. God’s word should permeate our hearts, souls, minds, and strength.
Do you talk about God? Do you love Him with all your heart, soul, mind and strength?
Hear! The LORD, He is God. He is the only God.
