God-Given Skills

Imagine being chosen by name by God Himself, out of millions of people, to use your skills for Him. Oh wait, that is what God calls us to do, each one of us, to use our unique gifts for His work and for His glory. What talent or skill has God given you? Use it for Him! In little or big ways, when we use our God-given talent to serve Him, we bless others, ourselves, and God.

God gave very detailed, very specific instructions to Moses when He gave Him the plans for building the tabernacle. And He gave Him very specific instructions as to who would do the detailed work.

“Now the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, ‘See, I have called by name Bezalel, the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. And I have filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of craftsmanship, to make artistic designs for work in gold, in silver, and in bronze, and in the cutting of stones for settings, and in the carving of wood, that he may work in all kinds of craftsmanship. And behold, I Myself have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and in the hearts of all who are skillful I have put skill, that they may make all that I have commanded you:'” ~ Exodus 31:1-7

I am going to digress for a moment here: We are told in Exodus 34 that after Moses spent forty days and forty nights on the mountain with God and saw His glory and nature revealed, when he returned to the people his face shone! “So when Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.” ~ Exodus 34:30. Moses “put a veil over his face” ~ Exodus 34:33b

God’s glory was reflected in Moses’ face. When we walk closely with God and spend time with Him, hopefully we take on more and more of God’s character and shine it in our lives for others to see.

Moses assembled the people, who were still fearful of Moses and his shining face, to hear what God had commanded of them and of himself. And Moses repeated what God had told him of Bezalel and Oholiab, in front of all the people. What an honor these men were given! They were to lead the work on the ark of the covenant, on all the instruments and furniture, and on the very walls of God’s tabernacle. And Bezalel was filled “with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding and in knowledge and in all craftsmanship…He also has put in his heart to teach, both he and Oholiab…He has filled them with skill to perform every work of an engraver and of a designer and of an embroiderer, in blue and in purple and in scarlet material, and in fine linen, and of a weaver, as performers of every work and makers of designs.” ~ Exodus 35:31, 34a, 35

God called them to an incredible task, but He gave them the power of His Spirit to do it. He also gave them the very skills He was asking them to use for Him. He called them to teach, and gave them the wisdom and understanding and knowledge and skills to do it.

Let’s walk with God, reflect His glory, and obediently use our God-given gifts, with the power of the Holy Spirit, to serve and glorify Him! If He calls you to do it, He will give you all you need and see you through it. 🙂
