Today is the fourth Sunday of Advent. Next Sunday we will be celebrating the birthday of Jesus with our family and enjoying His gift of love to us. There is a beautiful song by the band Jars of Clay ~ “Love came down at Christmas, Love, a lovely love divine, Love was born at Christmas, Stars and angels gave the sign. Love will be our token, Love be yours and love be mine, Love from God to all of us…” I think of that song and remember Love is a gift from God, and that He Himself is Love!
Note: Again, some families light the third candle as the Love candle, and the fourth as Joy or Gift. I am just sharing how our family celebrates Advent.
Our youngest daughter lights the fourth candle for us, and again it is fitting, because she has a loving heart. 🙂
Here are some verses to help us focus on this gift of Love:
“I love the LORD, because He hears my voice and my supplications.” ~ Psalm 116:1
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” ~ John 3:16
“See how great a love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are.” ~ 1 John 3:1a
“And we have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” ~ 1 John 4:16
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. We love, because He first loved us.” ~ 1 John 4:18-19
“Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails;” ~ 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a
“And beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.” ~ Colossians 3:14
“And may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the steadfastness of Christ.” ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:5
“keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.” ~ Jude 21
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” ~ John 13:34-35
Let’s love one another! Really, really love each other. Forgive, be gracious and merciful. Have patience and love for that difficult person. Buy some food for the person on the street corner, or at least smile at them. Donate to charity, put money in the red bucket, give up that great parking space, help someone in need. Give the gift of Love.
Merry Christmas! 🙂
