Darkness. Who isn’t afraid of the dark, at least a little bit? Everything is fine and friendly in the backyard during daylight hours, but when you go to let the dog out at midnight… What was that noise?? Imagine such a deep dark blackness that you cannot move.
Pharaoh asked Moses to ask the LORD to forgive his sin and to remove the locusts from the land, and God did so. But still Pharaoh would not listen.
“But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go. And the LORD said unto Moses, ‘Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness [which] may be felt.’ And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days: They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.” ~ Exodus 10:20-23 (KJV)
I cannot imagine the sheer, cold terror that must have gripped the people of Egypt. It was such an engulfing darkness that no one dared move, not even to light a lamp! We know that Satan loves darkness. Perhaps there were demonic forces at work in this thick darkness. That would explain why no one moved, and why the darkness was felt. Darkness is sin and despair and wickedness and death.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].” ~ Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)
We are told in the Bible that God is light, and the darkness flees from the light. Perhaps God’s presence was absent from the people of Egypt. What a horrible thought. I never want to be away from God’s presence! Yet the “children of Israel had light”~ God never left His people.
“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.'” ~ John 8:12 (KJV)
“‘I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on Me should not abide in darkness.'” ~ John 12:46 (KJV)
We are called to walk in the light, to be in the light. Don’t walk away from God’s presence and be in the dark!
“This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” ~ 1 John 1:5-7 (KJV)
Walk in the glorious Sonshine today! 🙂
*Note: I wrote this “on the go” today in the dentist’s waiting room. I used the Blue Letter Bible application, so the verses are King James instead of my New American Standard Bible at home. And if things are disjointed or there are errors, I apologize. 🙂 I am easily distracted!
