I am reading about the plagues of Egypt, and it constantly amazes me how I find something new each time I read a familiar passage. The Holy Spirit is always faithful to teach me something from God’s Word when I am faithful to sit down and study it.
God instructed Moses and Aaron to go before Pharaoh and give him a message from God ~ “Let My people go”. The miraculous sign of Aaron’s staff turning into a snake was duplicated by the magicians of the land (although Aaron’s snake ate the other snakes) and “Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.” ~ Exodus 7:13
Plague one: God turned the Nile River, and all its tributaries, into blood. Not water that was red in color, but the Bible says it actually became blood. The fish died, the water was foul, and the people had to dig new wells in order to find drinking water. The magicians turned a bit of water to blood, also, so Pharaoh was unimpressed. In fact, “Then Pharaoh turned and went into his house with no concern even for this.” ~ Exodus 7:23. He did not care that Egypt’s water supply was ruined.
Next came the plague of frogs. Frogs were EVERYWHERE. The magicians brought more frogs (that certainly wasn’t helpful!), but this time Pharaoh asked Moses, “‘Entreat the LORD that He remove the frogs from me and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may sacrifice to the LORD.'” ~ Exodus 8:8. So Moses asked the LORD to remove the frogs. “And the LORD did according to the word of Moses, and the frogs died out of the houses, the courts, and the fields. So they piled them in heaps, and the land became foul. But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.” ~ Exodus 8:13-15
By now, the land of Egypt must have stunk to high heaven. Yuck.
The third plague was the dust turning into gnats, little swarming, annoying insects. And finally, here was a plague the magicians could not duplicate. The dark spirits behind their magic were no match for the power of the One True God. And they recognized it.
“Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, ‘This is the finger of God.'” ~ Exodus 8:19a.
Satan and his demons know Who God is. We are told in the New Testament that they also know Who Jesus is. “And whenever the unclean spirits beheld Him, they would fall down before Him and cry out, saying, ‘You are the Son of God!'” ~ Mark 3:11
“You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.” ~ James 2:19
You can believe in God, but unless you accept His Son Jesus, and what He did on the cross for us, you are no better off than the demons.
“But Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.” ~ Exodus 8:19b. Pharaoh’s magicians told him this was from God, but he would not listen.
Believe that God is Who He says He is, recognize that we are all sinners, and then accept His gift of forgiveness and surrender your life to Him. Jesus died for our sins, so that we might live for eternity with Him. Don’t harden your heart like Pharaoh. Choose God’s mercy and grace! 🙂
“Choose life, that you might live!”
