It has been a rough week for many of us, and the main culprit, by and large, is Satan. Oh, the car may have died, a child was a pill, the job is miserable, the money didn’t stretch, and a friend pierced your heart, but ultimately those are all part of being in a fallen, broken, sin-filled world. And the prince of this world is gloating, no doubt, every time we stumble and fall. Fortunately, Jesus saves and Jesus wins, so keep on keeping on, and place your hope in Him!
Here I am, back in Revelation, and there is more about our awful accuser and enemy.
After the war is waged in heaven, and the dragon is thrown down to the earth, he (Satan) will persecute Israel. Then, in verse 13 of Revelation 12, “And the two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, in order that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she was nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent.” This is expounding on verse 6, where we are told by John that Israel will be protected in a place in the wilderness prepared by God for 3 1/2 years.
“And the serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, so that he might cause her to be swept away with the flood. And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and drank up the river which the dragon poured out of his mouth. And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.” ~Revelation 12:15-17
Satan will send a great army out to destroy Israel, but the earth will open up and swallow this army. In Numbers 16:31-33, God used this to deal with the rebellion of Korah~ “Then it came about as he finished speaking all these words, that the ground that was under them split open; and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men who belonged to Korah, with their possessions. So they and all that belonged to them went down alive to Sheol; and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly.”
Here is an excerpt from a commentary by Pastor Chuck Smith regarding this passage:
“Actually this great rift of which they call the Jordan Valley, of which the Dead Sea is a part, and of course the city of Petra on the other side, this great rift they believe was caused by a tremendous earthquake, seismic movement and all, and of course it is the greatest rift in the world. The Dead Sea is thirteen hundred feet below sea level and it is called the Great African Rift. It goes from Syria down into Africa. So, it is a place of historic, cataclysmic earthquakes and fire and brimstone that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. So again, even as Mount St. Helen’s laid dormant for one hundred and thirty-seven years and then suddenly popped, this area is just going to open up and close up again, and the army that is pursuing Israel will be swallowed.”
The last verse in this chapter is quite sobering, for Satan is a formidable foe even now, and is seeking to destroy us all. Imagine him enraged, and making war with those “who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus”.
Let’s keep loving others with the love of God, living for Jesus, and praying for those around us to come to Him, before this time of trial and terror comes upon the earth. I want all the people I know- and don’t know- to be snatched up and away from this earth when Jesus calls His Church home! Come quickly, Lord Jesus!
