The city of Thyatira is still in existence today. It was built for defense, for the elite Roman guard to be stationed there. Thyatira was known for their purple dye (Acts 16- Lydia was a seller of purple fabrics). It was a much smaller city than the first three, yet the church there was still sent a letter from Jesus.
The letter to the Church in Thyatira represents the time of 590-1500 A.D. in history.
“The Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet are like burnished bronze,” ~Revelation 2:18b. This is the only time in Revelation that Jesus calls Himself the Son of God. His eyes- He sees, fire- judgment.
“‘I know your deeds, and your love and faith and service and perseverance, and that your deeds of late are greater than at first.'” ~Revelation 2:19.
Jesus commended these people for six things: their deeds, works (James 2:18~ “and I will show you my faith by my works.”); their love; their faith; their service- the Greek word used is “diakonia”, which means to minister to others; their patience, endurance through all things, longsuffering; their works- the last are more than the first, not slacking off.
But. “‘But I have this against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, and she teaches and leads My bond-servants astray, so that they commit acts of immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.'” ~Revelation 2:20
Apparently there was a false teacher at that time, leading the people astray as Queen Jezebel in the Old Testament had done. She was a very wicked woman, married to King Ahab, and she had many prophets of God persecuted and killed during their reign. She also offered sacrifices to false gods and led Israel to do the same, forsaking their one true God.
Historically, Jezebel most likely represents the Roman Catholic church, which persecuted and put people to death during the Inquisitions, led the people to worship idols such as the saints and Mary, and kept the people from reading and knowing the true Word of God.
“‘And I gave her time to repent; and she does not want to repent of her immorality.'” ~Revelation 2:21. God gives us all time to repent, doesn’t want anyone to perish before getting right with Him (2 Peter 3:9). Verses 22-23 state the consequences that await this false prophetess, Jezebel, for not repenting.
“‘But I say to you, the rest who are in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not known the deep things of Satan, as they call them- I place no other burden on you. Nevertheless, what you have, hold fast until I come.'” ~Revelation 2:24. For those who hold fast to Jesus, He is coming to take us home! 🙂
